Any suggestions for a music theory text that would prepare a student for first-year college theory? I would like to make sure all the basics are covered and competent.

Wow - I just logged in to ask a question of my own and I imagine you've found an answer sometime in the last 3 months...but just in case you're still looking for suggestions, here's a book I like. You do it as a self-test kind of thing. I have an older edition.
